Huaraz J+132/133/134

On arrive à Huaraz à 5h30 du matin, notre priorité était évidemment de trouver un lit pour terminer notre courte nuit. On a déniché une chambre proche du terminal de bus où on a pu dormir jusqu’à 9h30. Nous avons ensuite passé le reste de la journée dans un petit café très sympa dans lequel nous avons pris un bon petit-déjeuner et nous nous sommes occupés de tout ce que nous avions en retard : répondre aux e-mails, mettre le blog à jour, préparer la suite de notre voyage et faire le point sur notre budget. On termine la journée par ce que nous attendions depuis très longtemps : une fondue ! Quel bonheur de pouvoir déguster ce fromage importé de France, on se serait presque cru à la maison.

Le deuxième jour, nous avons fait une petite marche d’acclimatation à la lagune Wilkacocha pour que notre corps s’habitue à l’altitude et éviter les symptômes du mal d’altitude lors de notre prochaine randonnée en haute montagne : la lagune 69. Départ à 3200 m puis 500 m de dénivelé positif. La première montée est un peu raide mais la suite de la marche se fait sans encombre. Une fois à la lagune, nous sommes un peu tristes parce que les nuages sont de la partie et du coup il est impossible de voir la cordillère blanche. On rentre alors à Huaraz où une crêpe au roquefort nous attend.

Le troisième jour est le plus attendu car aujourd’hui nous partons pour la fameuse lagune 69. Elle s’appelle comme cela car les péruviens ont compté chaque lagune depuis la base de la rivière jusqu’au sommet! Le réveil sonne à 5h du matin : ça pique. Après 2h30 de route, le bus nous dépose pour un petit déjeuner très apprécié afin de prendre des forces pour la journée qui nous attend. Encore une demi-heure de route sur une piste étroite le long de deux autres lagunes situées aux pieds de la montagne la plus haute du Pérou : Huascarán culminant à 6768m! La randonnée commence tranquillement par un faux-plat montant avant de se corser. La dernière montée casse les pattes mais après un peu plus de 2h de marche à un bon rythme la lagune nous offre son plus beau paysage à 4600m : un lagon bleu turquoise au milieu des glaciers. On est ravi d’arriver d’autant plus que le soleil fait son apparition, on est au paradis ! Il nous reste la descente très agréable avec une vue splendide sur toute la vallée et ses cascades. Après 3h de route pour retourner à Huaraz, nous prenons une douche rapide avant d’attraper le bus de nuit qui nous amène jusqu’à Lima à 8 heures de route.

We arrived in Huaraz at 5:30 in the morning and our priority was obviously to find a bed to finish our short night. We found a room near the bus terminal in which we were able to sleep until 9:30. We then spent the rest of the day in a very nice little cafe in which we had a good breakfast and we took care of everything we had late: respond to emails, update the blog, prepare the rest of our trip and take look on our budget. We end the day with what we had been waiting for a long time: a fondue! What a pleasure to be able to enjoy this cheese imported from France, we almost feel like home.

On the second day, we did a short hike to the Wilkacocha Lagoon to get used to the altitude and to avoid the altitude sickness symptoms during our next mountain hike: lagoon 69. Departure at 3200 m then 500 m of vertical drop. The first climb is a little steep but the rest of the walk is quite easy. Once at the lagoon, we are a bit sad because there are some clouds and it is impossible to see the white cordillera. We then return to Huaraz where a crepe with the Roquefort was waiting for us.

The third day is the most exciting one since we are going to do the famous lagoon 69 hike. It is called like this because the Peruvians counted each lagoon from the base of the river to the summit and this is the last lagoon! The alarm rings at 5am: it is tough. After 2h30 of road, the bus drops us for a very appreciated breakfast in order to take forces for the day that awaits us. Another half hour drive on a narrow track along two other lagoons located at the foot of the highest mountain in Peru: Huascarán peaking at 6768m! The hike begins slowly with a false flat rising before getting steeper. The last hill makes our legs suffered but after a little more than 2h of walk at a good pace the lagoon offered us its most beautiful landscape at 4600m: a blue lagoon in the middle of glaciers. We are delighted to arrive and happy to see the sun out of the clouds, we are in paradise! We had a very pleasant descent with a splendid view over the whole valley and its waterfalls. After 3 hours drive back to Huaraz, we took a quick shower before catching the night bus which took us to Lima at 8 hours driving.
